Plants make a home feel alive, but a dead plant just makes you feel guilty. If you lack a green thumb, start with these forgiving ones that thrive on neglect.

Why start with tough plants
A few early wins build confidence. Begin with plants that survive forgotten watering and low light, and you’ll actually keep going instead of giving up after one casualty.
The hard-to-kill list
- Snake plant. Tolerates low light and infrequent watering. Nearly indestructible.
- Pothos. Trailing vine that grows fast and forgives neglect; great on a shelf.
- ZZ plant. Glossy leaves, thrives in low light, needs water rarely.
- Spider plant. Adaptable, fast-growing, and produces “babies” you can replant.
- Aloe vera. Loves a sunny spot, needs little water, and is useful too.
- Money plant. A classic in Indian homes for good reason — tough and easy.
- Peace lily. Tells you when it’s thirsty by drooping, then perks right back up.
- Rubber plant. Striking leaves, low maintenance once settled.
The two mistakes beginners make
Overwatering kills more houseplants than neglect — most prefer slightly dry to soggy. And wrong light placement: match the plant to the light your room actually gets.
Start with one or two
You don’t need a jungle. One or two thriving plants do more for a room than ten struggling ones — and tie in nicely with a home refresh.
